Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly considering a move to Chelsea, a development that could spark a tug-of-war with his former club, Liverpool, according to a report from The Athletic's David Ornstein.

Chelsea are searching for a new head coach after parting ways with Liam Rosenior. The club's ownership has been linked with several high-profile candidates as they seek to bring stability and success back to Stamford Bridge.

Among the names in contention is Andoni Iraola, who is set to depart Bournemouth at the end of the season. However, Alonso, who was sacked at Real Madrid this season, having enjoyed a historic, unbeaten domestic double with Bayer Leverkusen last term, has emerged as a prime target.

Ornstein reported that the 42-year-old Spaniard is "understood to be open to the possibility" of taking the helm at Chelsea. While no final decision has been made, the West London club is actively exploring a deal to appoint him. Iraola, however, remains a strong contender for the position.

Liverpool Also ‘Interested’ in Alonso

This news places Chelsea in direct competition with Liverpool, where Alonso is a revered figure from his playing days. The Reds are also rumoured to be in the market for a new manager after their struggles under Arne Slot this season.

Anfield supporters might see the return of their former midfield maestro as a source of renewed hope, potentially creating a difficult choice for the Liverpool board.

Alonso's managerial stock skyrocketed after he guided Bayer Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title and a DFB-Pokal trophy in a remarkable 2023-24 season. His tactical acumen and success in Germany have made him one of the most sought-after coaches in European football.

However, he ran into headwinds at Real Madrid where he failed to deal with the egos in the dressing room leading to his sacking in January 2026.
