World Athletics Championships 2025: Beatrice Chebet Walks Away With Biggest Prize Purse From Tokyo
Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet asserted her authority as the new queen of track when it comes to long distance races.
Chebet, just like she did at the Paris 2024 Olympics, completed a memorable double when she won the 5,000m gold medal at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan on Saturday.
The 25-year-old had won Kenya’s first gold when she claimed the 10,000m title last Sunday and she was favourite to win 5,000m gold even though her best friend and defending champion Faith Kipyegon was also in the race.

How Much is Chebet Guaranteed from Tokyo?
She lived up to the billing by sprinting past Kipyegon in the 5,000m final to complete a rare double and make it a Kenyan 1-2 in the race in Tokyo.
Following her two gold medal wins, Chebet is set to be the Kenyan athlete who will bank the most money from Tokyo as she is guaranteed $140,000 (Ksh18 million), being the $70,000 (Ksh9 million) that World Athletics is rewarding each gold medalist.
Further, there is an extra Ksh6 million that will come from the Kenyan government which has pledged Ksh3 million for each gold, Ksh2 million for silver and Ksh1 for bronze.
Kenyan Great Tipped to Dominate for Years
It means from the one-week job in Tokyo, Chebet is set to take home a total of Ksh24 million from winning two gold medals, a feat only achieved by her from Team Kenya athletes in Japan.
The year 2025 has been Chebet’s season as she has remained unbeaten in 5,000m and also broke the world record over the distance in July.
Her exemplary performances suggest Kenya could dominate both 10,000m and 5,000m unless she experiences a remarkable dip in form or suffers a nasty injury.
