Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has defended his side's big splash this January transfer window in their bid to end their run of bad results.

The Cityzens have spent around €150 million on three players: Omar Marmoush €75 million, Abdukodir Khusanov €40 million and Vitor Reis €37 million. It is also quite likely they would spend more, given their problems in midfield.

Given the current PSR climate in the Premier League that has clipped the wings of otherwise lavish spenders in the Premier League, Manchester City's splurge has invited scrutiny.

What Guardiola said

The former Barcelona manager explained that they are able to make a splash this winter because of their healthy financial situation.

He explained that they have not been as active in previous windows in terms of incomings; hence, they had one of the lowest net spends in the division.

“People are saying: Man City are spending again,” Pep said. “Every successful team in this country in the last two/three decades spent more than the other clubs.  In the last five years, we are 11th in net spend. All clubs who have access go to the market, every club.”

Guardiola started two of his new signings, Marmoush and Khusanov, in the 3-1 triumph over Chelsea earlier today. While the Egyptian showed traces of his brilliance, Khusanov had a baptism of fire, as he was in the frame for Chelsea's goal.
