Wanyama became a cult hero at Southampton during his three years at the club, having become the first Kenyan to play in the English Premier league, when he joined for a reported £12.5 million from Scottish giants Celtic in the summer of 2013.

The Kenyan midfielder was a fan favourite due to his impressive displays in midfield as the Saints turned from relegation candidates to finishing eighth under Mauricio Pochettino, their best-ever top flight placing.

By the time he left to link up with Pochettino at Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2016, Wanyama had become one of the most sought-after midfielders in the Premier League, having made 97 appearances for Southampton.

Saints fans will have a chance to watch their former hero again as Wanyama is among a number of ex-Southampton players who have accepted to feature in a legends match involving Manchester United greats next month.

On Saturday March 28, St Mary’s Stadium will host the Southampton Legends XI against Manchester United Legends as the now English Championship club celebrates 50 years since winning the 1976 FA Cup against the Red Devils, which remains their only FA Cup triumph.

Former Saints stars Andrew Surman and Jos Hooiveld have also been confirmed with legendary Southampton striker Matt Le Tissier set to manage the side.

Meanwhile, the United Legends team will include former strikers Dimitar Berbatov and Louis Saha as well as ex-defender Wes Brown with club legend Bobby Robson set to manage the side.
