Victor Wanyama Sends Clear Message on AFC Leopards Coaching Role After Retirement Decision
Harambee Stars legend Victor Wanyama has opened up about the potential of coaching AFC Leopards or any other Kenyan club as he makes his transition.
Victor Wanyama officially announced his retirement from professional football on April 3, 2026, marking the end of a historic 18-year career.
The former Harambee Stars captain became the first Kenyan to play and score in the English Premier League with Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur.
Upon hanging up his boots, Victor Wanyama revealed that he is immediately transitioning into the dugout to share his extensive experience with the next generation.
The Spurs cult hero is currently focused on completing his UEFA A coaching license this year, signalling his intent to pursue a high-level career in football management and coaching.
Victor Wanyama: Why Coaching Clubs in Kenya is Not a Priority
The former Dunfermline Athletic midfielder has explained that he is not in a rush to immediately step into a coaching role or return to serve at local Kenyan clubs, saying his current priority is to broaden his experience and continue learning before taking on such responsibilities in the future.
Victor Wanyama noted that he wants to take time to understand different aspects of the game at a deeper level so that when he eventually makes the transition, he will be better prepared to contribute meaningfully.
The former CF Montreal midfielder also acknowledged his strong personal connection to AFC Leopards, describing it as a team he deeply values and would be open to supporting when the right moment comes.
While expressing admiration for the club’s current progress, he said he is pleased with their recent performances and hopes they can maintain their positive form throughout the season.
Victor Wanyama added that he was optimistic about their chances of achieving success in the league and would be cheering them on from afar.
“I don't want to focus just on coaching immediately. I just want to also have experience, learn so much, then when the time comes, I will come (to AFC Leopards). Yeah, of course,” Victor Wanyama told Pitchside With Tabu Peter.
“That's my club, and wherever I can help, I'll help. And you know this season they have been doing so well. So, I'm praying they continue like that, and hopefully we can get the league this season.”
