Victor Wanyama Reacts to Harambee Stars CHAN 2024 Exit
Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has hailed Benni McCarthy’s impact on Kenyan football as he consoled the players following an unexpected African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) exit.
Harambee Stars were defeated 4-3 in a penalty shootout after the game ended in a 1-1 draw in a match played on Friday, August 22, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, Nairobi.
Alphonce Omija scored the opening goal just after halftime, but Madagascar equalised with a penalty by Fenohasina Razafimaro in the 66th minute.

Despite a hard-fought match that went to extra time, neither team could find a winning goal. In the end, two missed penalties by Harambee Stars players proved decisive, with Madagascar securing their place in the semi-finals.
Victor Wanyama: The Journey Doesn't End
Following their exit, former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama has encouraged the players, noting that this is just the beginning of another chapter.
He penned emotional messages on his Instagram and X (Twitter) handles, lauding the players for giving their all on the pitch.
Victor Wanyama pointed out that Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy made fans fall in love with football once again, and that was an enough reason to appreciate his efforts.
Wanyama added that football is more than winning trophies, hence no need to worry for Harambee Stars who gave their all on the pitch.
“Proud of our Harambee Stars✨. You played with heart, courage, and unity, reminding us that football is more than trophies; it’s about pride, passion, and resilience. Though CHAN ends here, the journey continues. Onwards and upwards!” Victor Wanyama shared on his Instagram handle.

Harambee Stars CHAN 2024 Campaign
Being pooled in Group A, widely regarded as the ‘Group of Death’ due to the depth of the teams assembled, Harambee Stars defied all odds to top the table.
They were up against two-time champions DR Congo in the first match, winning 1-0 as Austin Odhiambo found the back of the net just before half-time.
Harambee Stars then locked horns with Angola, holding them to a 1-1 draw, thanks to Austin Odongo’s penalty. Ryan Ogam was the hero as Harambee Stars triumphed 1-0 over two-time champions Morocco and Zambia.
