‘They Play Beautiful Football’ - CAF Boss Patrice Motsepe Makes Big Claim About Kaizer Chiefs
CAF President Patrice Motsepe has revealed his love for South African giants Kaizer Chiefs despite being the owner of Mamelodi Sundowns.
Chiefs and bitter rivals Orlando Pirates remain South Africa’s most popular teams but in the last decade, they have been under the shadows of Sundowns, who have won the last eight league titles in a row.
In fact, only twice in the last 12 years have Sundowns failed to win the title with Chiefs (2015) and the defunct Bidvest Wits (2017) denying them the PSL crown over that period.
That is largely down to the resources put in the club by Motsepe which has seen Sundowns outspend the rest and bring in quality players for big money even from Europe and South America.
Despite owning a giant club and funding it, Motsepe admits it is hard to abandon Chiefs, who were the club he watched and supported while growing up.
What Has Motsepe Said About Kaizer Chiefs?
“I still watch Kaizer Chiefs,” Motsepe said during a recent session with South African journalists. “They play beautiful football. I also watch Moroka Swallows…Andries Maseko, [Joel] "Ace" Mnini, [Daniel] "Vader" Mophosho, all of those …and then of course Orlando Pirates. I have no choice; I have to watch them as well because they are my father’s club.”
Motsepe then made a shocking claim about his own club Sundowns, which is now run by his son Tlhopie Motsepe, who took over when he became CAF president in 2021.
“The one from Mamelodi, I do not watch them a lot but I hope all of them do well,” he surprisingly said.
Motsepe would be delighted with where Chiefs are on the table currently as they occupy third place with 22 points from 11 matches, just three behind his Sundowns, who have played a game more, with Pirates also on 22 in second position.
