‘Tactically Sound’ - Zech Obiero Lauds New Coach as He Looks to Impress After Harambee Stars Call-Up
Tranmere Rovers forward Zech Obiero has praised new manager Pete Wild, describing him as "a breath of fresh air" as the struggling squad aims to reverse its poor run of form.
Obiero, 20, is currently on loan from League One club Leyton Orient and has made a positive impact since his move, scoring two goals for Tranmere. The team is preparing to face Fleetwood on Saturday after a dismal stretch that has seen them lose 10 of their last 11 matches.
The young forward is optimistic that the new manager, who will be facing one of his former clubs, can spark a much-needed revival.
"He's a bag of energy," Obiero said of Wild as per Wirral Globe. "I think he's been a breath of fresh air and tactically sound. Obviously, we've had a really tough few weeks, and he's just trying to bring the confidence back."
However, Obiero emphasised that the responsibility ultimately lies with the players to deliver on the pitch.
Obiero Has Full Trust in New Manager
"New managers come in and do the best they can, and then it's down to us really," he explained. "They can give us all the tools we need, all the tactical sessions, but if we're not performing on the pitch at the end of the day, it doesn't matter who you bring in. It's going to be a collective thing that we have to do together."
With Tranmere sitting just seven points clear of the relegation zone, Wild faces immediate pressure to get results. Obiero revealed that the new manager's message in training has been direct and focused.
"It's been about being compact," he said. "We concede a lot of goals that we really shouldn't, and we should be more solid. It's about bringing that energy back that we feel we need, whether it's pressing or winning second balls. It's now 10 games, 10 cup finals to be safe."
Obiero believes adopting a high-stakes mentality for the remaining fixtures is crucial. "I like to look at it as 10 cup finals because you go into it putting everything into it, game by game. I think it's a good way to look at it."
Maiden Harambee Stars Call-Up
While enthusiastic about the new appointment, Obiero also took a moment to acknowledge former manager Nigel Adkins, who brought him to Prenton Park.
"He really welcomed me and made me feel confident to come in here and perform," Obiero stated. "The boys as well—they're a great group of lads, really positive."
For Obiero, the match against Fleetwood will be much more than three points as he will be looking to showcase his skills not just to Wild but Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy, who handed him a Kenyan call-up for the upcoming FIFA Series later this month.
Obiero is in line to make his Kenya debut during the mini-tournament which will see them face Grenada, Estonia and Rwanda in Kigali from March 23-31.
