Sha’Carri Richardson Sends Motivational Signal with Grandmother’s Pride Video
American sprint sensation Sha’Carri Richardson has once again paid heartwarming tribute to her grandmother Betty Harp.
In a touching video posted to her Instagram story, Richardson showcased her deep-rooted love and gratitude for the woman who raised her, with Harp delivering an emotional message of pride and admiration for the 25-year-old Olympian.
Though 2025 has not seen Richardson climb the podium yet, her influence and star power remain unwavering. Her last medal performance came at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and she has since faced setbacks including a disappointing ninth-place finish at this year’s Prefontaine Classic.

However, the three-time World medalist has made it clear—her motivation is still burning bright, powered in no small part by the enduring love and encouragement of her grandmother.
“My grandchildren are my life,” Betty Harp says in the emotional video.
“They give me that strength to get up the next morning and move around. That’s what they do for me. But Sha’Carri, she just make the shot. You see how I crossed that finish line? I’m proud of her. I’m proud of her.”
Roots That Run Deep: Family, Loss, and the Rise of a Champion
Richardson’s story is one of resilience, molded by personal loss and fortified by unconditional love.
After the departure of her biological mother, her aunt, Shay, stepped in to raise her, and it was Betty Harp who gifted her many of her most cherished childhood memories.
It was Shay who introduced the young Sha’Carri to the track, but it was Betty who gave her the grounding love and inspiration she needed to grow into the world-class athlete she is today.
Recalling an emotional moment from 2021, Harp described Richardson running up the stairs after qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics, embracing her with uncontainable joy.
That same Olympics, however, would be marked by heartbreak as Richardson was barred from competing after testing positive for cannabis , a moment she later explained was tied to coping with the loss of her biological mother.
But the fire in her has never waned. Now, as she sets her eyes on the 2025 World Championships, Richardson continues to honor the figures who shaped her path while refusing to let criticism, controversy, or setbacks derail her trajectory.
Eyes on the Future: Richardson Targets Double Duty at 2025 Worlds
Currently the reigning World Champion in the 100m, Richardson has a bye for the event at the 2025 World Championships.
However, she is not resting on past achievements. Speaking at the Wanda Diamond League alongside fellow track icons, she confirmed her intentions to compete in the 200m at the U.S. National Championships, the qualifier for Worlds.
“It’s definitely an honor that I am the reigning World Champion in the 100m,” Richardson said.
“So I will be having a bye in the 100m but I plan on competing in the 200 coming up for the trials.”
Despite facing a turbulent 2025 season so far, Richardson remains unfazed.
