South African Football Association (SAFA) President Danny Jordaan has indicated that Hugo Broos could remain as the head coach of Bafana Bafana even after the 2026 FIFA World Cup amid Pitso Mosimane’s interest.

The Belgian coach, who will be 73 by the time the tournament concludes, had previously suggested he would retire after leading the South African men's national team for what would be nearly five years.

However, Danny Jordaan has confirmed that discussions about his future will take place following the global showpiece.

"Many people ask, ‘Why are you achieving success now?’ The reason is simple," the SAFA president told SABC Sport, highlighting the recent progress of the national teams.

Danny Jordaan attributed this success to coaching stability, a key factor he believes has been crucial. "We have not changed coaches over the last four years before the expiry of their contracts," he explained. "Hugo Broos has been serving his contract, and we have to discuss with him."

While acknowledging Broos's retirement plans, Jordaan emphasised that the conversation is not over. "He’s indicated that at the end of his contract he’ll have reached his retirement age, but we still have a conversation to have."

The SAFA president pointed to the long tenures of both Broos and Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis, who has been in her role for a decade, as proof of the association's commitment to stability.

"Desiree Ellis has been with us for 10 years. Never in the history of South African football have you had a coach appointed and staying the course," Jordaan added. "It’s been difficult, and very often people suggest why this or that coach must go."

Pitso Mosimane Interested in Bafana Bafana Role

Meanwhile, as Hugo Broos prepares to retire following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Pitso Mosimane has officially declared his interest in returning to the Bafana Bafana dugout.

The highly decorated former Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns tactician made his intentions clear, stating, "If you ask me to sign the contract, I’ll sign it today because it means a lot to me."

Pitso Mosimane is specifically driven by a desire to capture the one major continental trophy missing from his cabinet, noting, "The AFCON medal is the one that I want to close everything."

He believes the timing is ideal due to the current surge in domestic talent, asserting, "There’s no other better time to coach Bafana than now."

While he insists he is "not campaigning" for the role, his availability has sparked intense debate among supporters and legends like Benni McCarthy.

Pitso Mosimane remains firm that he will only accept a structured, long-term project rather than a reactionary appointment. Ultimately, Pitso Mosimane feels that with the right backing, South Africa has the capacity to finally conquer the continent once more.
