Despite whispers of a fallout or even early retirement, Coach Madugu insists that Oshoala’s exclusion is neither permanent nor personal.

Speaking in a recent interview, he clarified that the decision was strategic, aimed at giving new talents international exposure ahead of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

According to Madugu, “Her leadership and experience are not in doubt. We are simply trying to open the door for new players… Asisat is still very much a part of this team.”

This approach comes as Nigeria prepares to face Cameroon in a two-legged friendly clash, with WAFCON looming on the horizon.

While the official stance is squad rotation, Oshoala’s club form may also be playing a role. Since the start of the year, the former Barcelona striker has failed to score in seven consecutive matches for Bay FC.

With WAFCON spots on the line, that form likely weighed into the equation in Magudu’s mind as the country looks to him to take the Super Falcons back to the summit of African football.

Still, Madugu’s message is clear: this isn’t goodbye, it’s just a temporary reshuffle. Whether Oshoala returns in time for WAFCON remains to be seen.
