Remo Stars vs Akwa United: It’s now or never for the Sky Blues — Preview
For the fourth consecutive matchday in the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, Remo Stars will be involved in a Super Sunday clash.
Remo hosts Akwa United in the Remo Stars Stadium later today in the standout fixture for week 16 in Group A of the abridged season.
The Sky Blues have battled Shooting Stars, leaders Bendel Insurance and were Enyimba’s guests in Aba last weekend.
While they have survived unscathed, the Blues have dropped six points from a possible nine in the battle to make the Super Six.
Another bulwark is here for Daniel Ogunmodede and his Remo Stars, a head-to-head against second-placed Akwa United in Ikenne.
While time is of the essence, it is one valuable asset that Ogunmodede’s side does not possess at this stage of the season.
Therefore, here are three (3) reasons why the Sky Blues must take the bull by the horn now and turn their season around or forget about the glamorous Super Six.
Three finals await Remo Stars - a United affair
The race for the Super Six has been an intense one and will be in the coming weeks with just three games left in the regular, albeit abridged, season.
There is no gain in saying it has not been a difficult run-in for the Ikenne-based side in all ramifications, but it’s time to show they deserve to ‘bam bam’ with the big boys.
Remo has gone through it and kudos to them for not tasting defeat but that’s the problem - they have lost six points in the process.
After the Promise Keepers, they travel to Jos to face another contender for the Super Six in Plateau United before hosting Kwara United.
Leave draw soups alone
While the Sky Blues are unbeaten in the last five matches in the NPFL, they have managed just one win in that time.
That lone victory came in the 2-1 away win at El Kanemi Warriors back in March 26 2023, five weeks ago.
Since then, the Blues have drawn four of four matches which has since them drop to seventh in Group A, four points from the Super Six.
Remo has three games and nine points left to fight for starting with the clash against Akwa. It’s time to turn those draws into wins.
Find the goals NOW!
One of the biggest problems Remo have faced in the Football League this season has been a lack of goals.
The Sky Blues have only managed 11 goals in 15 games this season, an average of 0.73 goals per game. Surely, that’s not a title contender figure.
Manager Ogunmodede, to be fair to him, tried to fix that with the signing of forgotten Super Eagles star Junior Lokosa.
However, the former Kano Pillars man suffered an unfortunate injury that ruled him out for the season before he could show what he could do.
Nevertheless, there is no need to worry about spilt milk. The season has moved on and so should the Sky Blues by finding the goals now.
Perhaps the senior boys can ask their U15 boys, Beyond Limits, who recently thrashed everyone en route to glory in the NPFL LaLiga U15 Promises for tips.
The Beyond Limits youngsters led by Opeyemi Yusuf netted 20 goals in just six matches, an average of over 3.33 goals per game.
Find the goals now, Remo, i don warn una o.
