Police Probe Mystery Death of Chinese National at Talanta Stadium Site
A Chinese national has been found dead at the Talanta Sports Stadium construction site in Jamhuri, Nairobi, triggering a police investigation into the incident.
Authorities confirmed the man was discovered unresponsive inside a toilet block on the stadium grounds. Security personnel at the site, which is still under construction, were the first to raise the alarm.
According to initial reports, a chef employed by the Chinese management team found the body on Tuesday morning. After security and other workers arrived at the scene, the man was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to Nation Sport, police have since examined the location as part of their ongoing inquiries. While an official cause of death has not been determined, investigators noted a minor injury on the right side of the man’s head. His body has been moved to Lee Funeral Home to await a post-mortem examination.
Investigation Considers Foul Play
Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud stated that detectives are pursuing two primary lines of inquiry: sudden death or potential foul play.
This death marks the second such incident at the same construction site in recent months, adding to growing concerns.
Late last year, the body of another worker, 35-year-old Sammy Kyengo, was recovered from the site after he was reported missing.
His body was found a week later, submerged in a hidden water sump beneath the stadium's terraces. Investigators reported that the area had been partially covered and that the body appeared to have been concealed.
Police noted that Kyengo had visible injuries to the back of his head and neck, with blood observed coming from his nose and mouth. Following the discovery, his wife revealed that he had been distressed over unpaid wages.
"He told me the company had refused to pay them since July," Sammy Kyengo’s wife said. "He wanted to collect his money and quit the job."
The 60,000-seat Talanta Sports City Stadium is a key venue being built to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The state-of-the-art facility is slated to host tournament matches and is a candidate for the opening and closing ceremonies as part of the joint bid by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
