With speculation linking legendary coach Pitso Mosimane with a return to Mamelodi Sundowns, his potential comeback has been endorsed by a former player.

Mosimane is Sundowns’ most successful coach, who won five league titles and delivered their only CAF Champions League crown in an eight-year spell between 2012 and 2020, before coaching in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Iran.

Recent reports claim Sundowns have been in talks with the 61-year-old over the possibility of taking over from Portuguese tactician Miguel Cardoso, whose reign has seen the club fail to play an attractive brand of football that fans were used to under Mosimane and later Rulani Mokwena.

While Sundowns are still winning, their fans, who were used to the possession-based style, popularly known as “shoeshine and piano,” have not been impressed while the team has dropped 13 points from their opening 13 games of the season, ending 2025 in an unfamiliar second place on the table.

Former Sundowns midfielder Manqoba “Shakes” Ngwenya, is among those who cannot wait for the man nicknamed ‘Jingles’ to return to the Pretoria-based South African giants.

Will Mosimane Bring Back ‘Shoeshine and Piano’?

“Just music to my ears because we all know what Pitso brings to Sundowns. Pitso is Sundowns DNA, he knows Sundowns in and out and brought glory to Sundowns,” Ngwenya said on SoccerBeat.

“He brought that star [Champions League title] to Sundowns and all those league titles but things have not been running smoothly with Sundowns lately. The faithful are not happy with the style of play even though we are grinding results.

“We are used to the shoeshine and piano. It is not enough to win, you have to win in style,” the 44-year-old further said.

Cardoso is looking to lead Sundowns into the second half of the season but with news of Mosimane’s second coming, his performances will be under huge scrutiny.

Sundowns are second on the league table with 26 points from 13 matches, two behind leaders Orlando Pirates, who have a game in hand.
