Pitso Mosimane Set for Stunning Return to North Africa Following Esteghlal Departure

South African coach Pitso Mosimane could be on the verge of a sensational return to North African football, with reports linking the highly decorated tactician to Egyptian powerhouse Zamalek SC.

Having most recently managed Iranian side Esteghlal FC, Mosimane has been without a club since January after parting ways with the Persian Gulf Pro League outfit over unpaid salaries.

Despite his brief stint in Iran, the former Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns boss remains one of the most respected African coaches on the continent, and speculation surrounding his next move is intensifying.

According to Egyptian football legend-turned-journalist Ahmed Hassan, intermediaries have already offered Mosimane’s services to the White Knights.

“There are intermediaries who have offered Pitso Mosimane to Zamalek,” Hassan revealed in a recent broadcast.

The report adds further fuel to longstanding rumours linking the 60-year-old with a return to the Egyptian Premier League.

Mosimane is no stranger to Egyptian football, having etched his name into the history books during a trophy-laden spell with Zamalek's arch-rivals Al Ahly.

During his tenure with the Club of the Century, he guided the Red Devils to back-to-back CAF Champions League titles in 2020 and 2021, an Egyptian Premier League crown, two CAF Super Cups, and an Egyptian Cup.

His remarkable success in Egypt helped elevate his reputation across the continent and beyond, making him a sought-after figure for ambitious clubs.

A return to Cairo — albeit to the other side of the city's footballing divide — would be a significant move and one that could potentially reignite Zamalek’s dominance in African football.

Despite the speculation, Zamalek have yet to announce a permanent head coach, with Ayman El Ramadi currently serving as interim manager.

However, with the team in transition and looking to rebuild, the timing could be right for a figure of Mosimane’s calibre to step in.

While Mosimane appears to be a leading candidate, he is not the only name reportedly in the frame.

Romanian coach Laurentiu Reghecampf, who has previous experience in the region with Al Wasl and Al Ahli Jeddah, is also understood to be in contention for the hot seat.

Soccer Laduma previously reported that Mosimane’s exit from Esteghlal came under challenging circumstances, with unpaid dues and contractual issues clouding his departure.

“The South African tactician has been out of the managerial dugout ever since leaving Iranian giants Esteghlal FC midway through this season,” the publication noted.

This uncertainty might raise questions for any potential suitor, but it also signals that the coach is ready for a new chapter.
