Omanyala's younger brother shares interesting reason why he ditched rugby for athletics
Ferdinand Omanyala’s young brother Isaac Omurwa has shared an interesting reason why he quit rugby for athletics, just like his elder brother.
Omurwa shared that he had been playing rugby since High School but he decided to shift because he was avoiding the dangers of being a rugby player.
Despite rugby being one of the lucrative sports in the country and the federation currently searching for players, Omurwa said he has no interest in going back to participate in the sport.
“I love my body and I didn’t want to get hurt more often…I think that’s the only reason. I’m aware sprinters also have injuries but they are not as fatal as the ones in rugby,” Omurwa said.
He added that rugby and sprinting are very different types of sports and he wanted diversity. He added that the only common things they share are power and strength.
He disclosed that Omanyala just asked him if he wanted to continue with rugby or switch and at that time, he made u his mind to switch to sprinting.
“I never wanted to be a sprinter but my brother influenced that decision in me and I decided to give it a try. I’m improving day by day and I am impressed.
Rugby and sprinting are totally different and the only things they have in common are strength and power…you need to possess both in order to do well in both categories,” he said.
He added that he did not expect to make an impact starting out his professional career this year. He opened his season with a win at the East Africa Junior Championships in Tanzania.
He then proceeded to the Africa Junior Championships in Zambia and reached the final but failed to finish in the podium bracket.
He has promised to go back to the drawing board and train hard as he looks forward to making a mark next season.
