Old faces return to the squad – Mixed reactions as Super Falcons coach release WAFCON list
The release of Nigeria’s 24-woman squad for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) by head coach Justine Madugu has sparked mixed reactions among fans and football stakeholders alike, as several veteran players return to the national team ahead of the tournament in Morocco from July 5 to 26.
The Super Falcons, nine-time continental champions, are gunning for their 10th WAFCON title, and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has described the squad as a “blend of experience and emerging talent.”
But while many hail the list as balanced, others believe some selections could have been more forward-looking.
The Big return
Among those returning to the squad are Asisat Oshoala, Francisca Ordega, Osinachi Ohale, and Halimatu Ayinde, bringing with them years of top-level international experience.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade leads the team following a strong club season while promising youngsters like Deborah Abiodun and Jennifer Echegini offer a glimpse into the squad's future.
Mixed reactions
While many Nigerians are excited about the star-studded list, especially the presence of foreign-based stars like Michelle Alozie and Ashleigh Plumptre, others have questioned the return of older players they feel should have made way for fresh faces.

I don’t mind the list… 1 out of the 3 players I was hoping won’t show still here but I don’t mind... I’m also excited to see Francisca Ordega in the squad list too. She’s a legend and deserves a call up especially if Oshola is still being called up too #fairs
