NPFL Standings: Relegation battlers Sporting Lagos live to fight another day after shock Enyimba win

Sporting Lagos have given themselves a lifeline in the battle to avoid the drop after a late winner against dethroned champions Enyimba.

Godwin Odibo put the relegation-threatened side ahead just before the break with a superb team goal.

But Enyimba, who have relinquished their crown, levelled things up through top scorer Chijioke Mbaoma's 16th strike of the season from the spot.

Sporting Lagos' hero Jonathan Alukwu, however, popped up with the winner five minutes from time to revive their fading survival hopes.

The result leaves Sporting sitting precariously just above the drop zone, but they will go into the final game of the season with a chance of avoiding the dreaded drop.

Enyimba's defeat also dents their hopes of securing a spot in next season's CAF Champions League.

Following the result between Sporting Lagos and Enyimba, the Tech Boys are currently 17th on the log and look set for division two next season. 

The NPFL newbies seemed to have left the danger zone after Alukwu’s goal, however, Bayelsa United’s remarkable turnaround in Yenagoa completely changed things against the Tech Boys.\

For Enyimba, the defeat meant they had failed in their title defence with Rangers confirmed winners with a game to go.

Also, the Elephants are facing the possibility of missing out on Champions League football after dropping to third.
