The first phase of the 2023 NPFL abridged season came to an exhilarating end with the lineup for the Super Six now complete.
The trio of Enyimba, Remo Stars and surprise package, Sunshine Stars, who sneaked in from Group B, secured their tickets on the final day on Sunday.
22 goals were scored across 10 matches for an average of 2.2 goals per game, with Ikenne providing the best entertainment on the day.
Here is a breakdown of what happened on the final day of the NPFL season;
Enyimba hold Shooting Stars
The biggest game of the day saw eight-time champions Enyimba take on Shooting Stars at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.
Finidi George and his People’s Elephant went into the game aware that just a point will be enough to see them through to the Super 6 and that is exactly what they got.
Despite the pre-game hype, the tie failed to live up to expectations as both sides shared the spoils after a rudderless goalless affair in Group A.
Remo Stars thrash Kwara United
This was one game that many expected Remo Stars to win as they went into the game unbeaten at home this season.
Kwara United had endured a difficult campaign but had secured their NPFL status for another season heading into the game.
However, while goals have been had to come by this season for the home side, they ran riot against the Afonja Warriors after a 4-0 win.
Philip Odubia was the man of the match after he netted a brace in the game with Andy Okpe and academy graduate Odunsi Sunday the other scorers for the Sky Blues.
Sunshine Stars blitz Dakkada to sneak in
Group B provided the best drama with four teams fighting for just one available slot after Rivers United and Lobi Stars had secured two tickets.
Two of the teams, Abia Warriors and Doma United faced each other in Umuahia while Sunshine Stars hosted already relegated Dakkada in Akure.
With two rivals in a head-to-head battle, the Akure Arsenal took advantage to thrash their guests from Uyo 3-0 to sneak into the playoff despite Abia Warriors 2-0 win over Doma United, who started the day in third place.
Two first half goals from Michael Olulasi and Nnaemeka Achi and a late third from Udom Edem Ekerette fired the Akure side into the Super 6 in style.
