The vice president of South Africa’s Football Association, Natasha Tsichlas, aimed a dig at the Super Eagles, stating that Nigeria had lost their fear factor in continental football.
The Super Eagles will most likely miss the 2026 World Cup, and the draw against South Africa earlier this week determined their fate.
Eric Chelle's side had to beat Bafana Bafana in Bloemfontein to keep their qualification dreams alive but needed a controversial goal to escape with a point.
For Tsichlas, South Africa’s performance against Nigeria is evidence of their ascendency and status as a new football powerhouse on the continent. For Nigeria, however, she believes it signalled their loss of lustre.
What she said
"With all due respect, there’s nothing 'super' about the Super Eagles anymore,” she said, per Kickoff.com. “I remember the years when they were truly 'super' while playing against Bafana.
"If you look at how Bafana played, especially in the first half, it was fantastic. The passing, the skills, and the moves were unbelievable. They didn’t even look when they passed to each other.
"It reminded me of the beautiful football we used to play. I really enjoyed that game. And you saw the way Nigeria scored their goal.”
South Africa are leading Group C with three points. Benin Republic, on 14 points, are their closest rival. With two games left to play, collecting four from the available six points guarantees South Africa’s participation in the global showpiece. But Tsichlas wants them to collect maximum points and cement their dominant status.
"Yes, we only need four points to qualify, but we must win both of our remaining games. We were very happy with the point against Nigeria. Everyone celebrated in Bloemfontein.”
“We felt joy because of how well Bafana performed. I know that Bafana now instills fear across Africa. The players show such commitment and skill in their play.”
