Naom Jebet triumphs in Madrid for first international marathon victory
Naom Jebet has made a spectacular international debut by clinching her first international city marathon win at the prestigious Madrid Marathon.
Clocking an impressive time of 2:26:20, Jebet outpaced a competitive field in Spain’s capital.
This victory is a landmark achievement for Chebet, who last year took the title at the Nairobi City Marathon.
Trailing behind Chebet was Ethiopia’s Bontu Bekele who finished the race in 2:27:04.
Bekele’s performance was strong but she could not close the gap on Jebet in the final kilometers.
Kebne Chala, another Ethiopian athlete, secured the third spot on the podium with a time of 2:27:30.
Ayantu Abdi, finishing fourth at 2:29:05, and Kenya’s Betty Chepkorir, rounding out the top five in 2:29:12, also displayed commendable performances.
In the men’s category, the competition was equally fierce. Ethiopia's Mitku Tafa claimed the top position with a remarkable time of 2:08:58.
He was closely followed by fellow Ethiopian Fikre Bekele, who completed the race just seconds later at 2:09:09.
Kenya’s Douglas Chebiicame finished strong to claim third place in a tight finish, recording a time of 2:09:11.
Other notable finishers in the men’s race included Gaddisa Tafa Dekebe (2:09:52), Musa Mitei (2:10:26), and Embay Goitom (2:11:37), who all put in strong efforts but fell short of the podium.
