Millions Nairobi United Will Miss After CAF Confederation Cup Group Stage Elimination
Nairobi United's journey in the CAF Confederation Cup will end at the group stage seeing them miss out on a bumper reward.
Naibos' fate was sealed with two group matches still to play after losing 1-0 to Azam FC in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.
‎The Salim Ali-coached team needed a win to revive their slim hopes having headed into matchday four with just one point picked in a 1-1 draw with Congolese side Maniema Union.
Maniema had shocked Wydad Athletic Club in the early kick off to join the Moroccan giants on nine points meaning Azam and Nairobi United needed to win to have any chance of making it to the quarter-final.
How Much Will Naibos Miss
However, an early goal from Feisal Salum aka Fei Toto was all Azam needed to sink the Kenyan side and now with two games to go against Wydad and Maniema Union, the maximum they can get is seven points.
It sees their historic run come to an end and after pocketing $400,000 (Ksh51.9 million) for reaching the group stage, they will miss out on $550,000 (Ksh71.4 million) which will be awarded to the eight teams that will reach the Confederation Cup quarter-final.
It is a lucrative amount that would have further boosted the club's coffers but given their relative inexperience, they could not match the class of the other teams in the competition.
It was a good learning curve for Nairobi United nonetheless and will hope that making it to continental football in their debut season in the top flight will inspire them to do it again.
