Miguel Cardoso Reveals His Biggest Challenge at Mamelodi Sundowns: 'It's Very Difficult'
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has opened up about the significant challenge of managing a squad brimming with top-tier talent, stating that keeping every player content is his most difficult task.
The reigning champions have recently navigated a period of turbulence. A brief dip in form saw them concede ground to Orlando Pirates in the Betway Premiership title race, and an unexpected early exit from the Nedbank Cup fueled speculation about the team's harmony.
However, Mamelodi Sundowns have since steadied the course, securing three consecutive league victories. Their latest triumph, a 3-1 win against Sekhukhune United at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, showcased the formidable depth of their roster. But for Miguel Cardoso, the true test lies beyond tactics and on-field performance.
Miguel Cardoso Speaks Out on Managing Mamelodi Sundowns
"Working with high-quality players also brings problems that are different from the ones that don’t have such quality," he explained. "It’s very difficult to manage a locker room that has players of high quality who are not in the line-up."
The team selection for the Sekhukhune match highlighted this dilemma. Players like Bathusi Aubaas, Sphelele Mkhulise, and Miguel Reisinho were omitted from the squad entirely, while established stars such as Nuno Santos and Themba Zwane were named on the bench, a testament to the intense competition for places.
"Managing a team that has this kind of level is very difficult because the expectation from all of them is that they have to play because they have the quality," Cardoso added.
The Portuguese tactician emphasised that fostering unity among those not in the starting eleven is crucial for success.
"How you create the commitment from the ones that are outside is even more important than the commitment you create from the ones that are inside," he noted.
As the season approaches its climax, the title race is finely poised. With 12 matches left, Sundowns and Orlando Pirates are level on 41 points after 18 games, with only goal difference separating them.
Miguel Cardoso remains wary of declaring it a two-horse race, stressing that consistency will be the ultimate decider.
"There are a lot of championship matches to play, and some of them are very tricky," he said, alluding to potential disruptions like venue changes and opponents' tactical adjustments.
This caution is particularly relevant as Sundowns prepare to host Golden Arrows on Wednesday. Arrows are the only team to have defeated the Brazilians in the league this season, securing a memorable 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture.
In a title race defined by the narrowest of margins, Sundowns understand that talent alone is not enough. The ability to maintain squad harmony and collective focus may ultimately determine whether they successfully defend their crown.
