The allegations surfaced just days before a crucial group stage match at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, where a victory would secure Mamelodi Sundowns' place in the quarter-finals. The official in question is reportedly a performance analyst, Mario Masha.

Mamelodi Sundowns Confirm Suspension and Investigation

Speaking to Sports Night Amplified, Mamelodi Sundowns spokesperson and ambassador Tiyani Mabunda confirmed that the analyst is currently not with the team while the club looks into the matter.

"Definitely [Masha is suspended]; we’re doing the internal checks and internal investigations so we’re able to make the right call," Mabunda stated.

"Mamelodi Sundowns is not an impulsive club; we’re trying to make sure to get everything right before we make a decision."

Mabunda emphasised the club's desire to handle the situation thoroughly but swiftly. "We’re looking forward to resolving this matter as soon as possible, because we’ve got so many critical responsibilities lying on our table now. Internal investigations are ongoing, and hopefully, soon the club will make a statement."

Details Remain Under Wraps

When pressed for more details on the validity of the allegations, Mabunda remained cautious, stressing the need for a proper inquiry before drawing any conclusions.

"With that situation, it’s a very, very tricky one, because internal investigations are still ongoing to find out how true, how valid everything is," he explained.

He noted that the issue is confined to the technical team, making it a sensitive area. "It’s been happening within the setup of the playing team... It’s more within the playing side, that information I don’t even think the players get to know what’s happening, especially with analysis. It’s within the technical side, so we’re also trying to find ways to mitigate the situation."

High Stakes for Champions League Clash

The controversy adds another layer of pressure to what is already a high-stakes encounter for Rulani Mokwena's side.

Mamelodi Sundowns must avoid defeat against the Algerian team to guarantee their progression to the last eight of the continent's premier club competition.

The previous Group C fixture between the two clubs in Algeria ended in a goalless draw. The decisive return leg is scheduled for Saturday, February 14.
