Michael Olunga’s Season Halted as Qatar Suspends League Amid Iran-Israel-US War
The Qatar Football Association (QFA) has announced the indefinite suspension of all football activities in the country, a move that directly impacts Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga and his club, Al Arabi.
The decision comes as a response to escalating regional conflict and heightened security concerns. Tensions in the Gulf have risen following military actions involving Israel and Iran, leading to a volatile situation that has affected several nations, including Qatar.
In a statement released on Sunday, the QFA confirmed the immediate halt of all domestic competitions.
"The Qatar Football Association announces the postponement of all tournaments, competitions, and matches, effective from today and until further notice. The new dates for the resumption of competitions will be announced in due course through the Association's official channels," the statement said.
The ongoing instability has paralysed many economic and social activities across the nation for safety reasons.
Olunga Was Enjoying Good Season
The risk to air travel has been a significant factor, with Qatar recently closing its airspace after intercepting missiles and drones over its territory. The presence of Al Udeid Air Base, a major U.S. military installation, further positions the country at the centre of regional dynamics.
For Olunga and Al Arabi, the suspension brings the season to an abrupt stop with only five matches remaining. The league had completed 17 rounds, with Al Arabi positioned sixth in the standings with 24 points.
The Kenyan striker has been in good form, netting six league goals, just one behind the club's top scorer, former Paris Saint-Germain player Pablo Sarabia.
With the security situation making it untenable to continue sporting events, the QFA's decision prioritises the safety of players, staff, and the public until stability is restored.
