Reigning Kenyan 400m champion Mercy Oketch is set to make her official Diamond League debut this Saturday, May 16, in Shanghai.

This comes after her appearance in the Brussels Diamond League Invitational race last year hinted at a promising future on the global stage.

The 23-year-old enters the competition on the back of an impressive start to her season. She recently anchored Kenya's 4x400m mixed relay team to a fourth-place finish at the World Athletics Relays in Botswana on May 3, narrowly missing a bronze medal.

Oketch now aims to establish herself among the elite in the prestigious one-day meeting. The Shanghai event, held in Keqiao, is the first of 15 legs in the Diamond League series, which will conclude in Brussels later this year.

The Kenyan sprinter will be looking to translate her recent record-breaking form onto the track, having been part of the team that set a new 4x400m mixed relay area and national record of 3:09.87 at the World Relays.

It has been a packed season for Oketch, who began her campaign indoors in January, setting a national record at the World Indoor Championships in Torun. Her outdoor season has included appearances at the Lefika International Relays in March and the Addis Ababa Grand Prix.

At the recent Kip Keino Classic, she dominated the women’s 400m, clocking a season-best 50.17 to win ahead of Paris Peoples (51.06) and Mercy Chebet (51.14). She also delivered a standout performance at the Simbine Classic, where she won the 300m in a world-leading time of 35.77, breaking the Kenyan national record and narrowly defeating American Kenondra Davis (35.81).

In Keqiao, Oketch will return to her signature 400m event, facing a formidable lineup. The field includes Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser, the 2019 world champion with a personal best of 48.14, and Jamaica’s Nickisha Pryce, the 2024 NCAA champion who boasts a time of 48.57.

The competition will also feature two-time world bronze medalist Sada Williams of Barbados, last year’s NCAA 400m champion Aaliyah Butler, and 2025 world finalist Roxana Gómez, promising a challenging debut for the rising Kenyan star.
