Ferdinand Omanyala Gears Up for Another Sub-10 in Shanghai Amid Star-Studded Line-Up
Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, faces a stern test as he gears up for his first Diamond League race of the season in Shanghai on May 16.
The reigning Commonwealth Games champion will once again be looking to make a mark after an impressive start to his 2026 season.
Ferdinand Omanyala kick-started his 2026 campaign with an indoor tour before making his 100m debut at the Cape Miller Continental Tour with a win in 10.19 seconds.
Omanyala proceeded to the Addis Ababa Grand Prix, where he claimed the win in the men’s 100m, clocking his first sub-10 performance in over a year. He crossed the finish line in 9.98 seconds.
The Kenyan sprint sensation then treated home fans to a spectacular show, winning the men’s 100m at the Kip Keino Classic in 9.96 seconds.
Ferdinand Omanyala then tasted his first defeat of the season at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix, finishing third in 9.95 seconds. Now, Omanyala heads to Shanghai with the hope of continuing his hot streak; however, he faces very formidable rivals.
Ferdinand Omanyala to Face Christian Coleman, Letsile Tebogo, Akani Simbine and Co
Ferdinand Omanyala will be joined by fellow African stars, Olympic silver medallist (4x100m) Akani Simbine, South Africa’s national champion Gift Leotlela and Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo.
Akani Simbine is just fresh from competing at the Pegaso Meeting in Firenze, where he finished third in 10.28 seconds. Competing at the Simbine Classic, the South African finished a distant eighth in the final.
Gift Leotlela also had a brilliant start to his season before being disqualified for a false start at the Kip Keino Classic.
On his part, Letsile Tebogo has had an amazing season so far, despite an injury scare earlier that forced him to withdraw from the Botswana National Championships.
The former world 100m silver medallist won the 100m and 200m at the BAA Track and Field Series 2 before heading to the CGA U16,U18,U20,U23 and Senior Provincial Championships, where he won his heat in the 100m and 400m.
Letsile Tebogo then lined up for the 100m and 400m at the ACNW League before heading to the Road-To-Botswana Golden Grand Prix, where he was also impressive.
The American charge will be led by Kenny Bednarek, the Olympic 200m silver medallist, Christian Coleman and Trayvon Bromell.
Kenny Bednarek will be competing in his first 100m race of the season after a series of relay races. On his part, Christian Coleman will also be competing in his first official 100m of the season after the Stawell Gift and one relay race.
Trayvon Bromell announced his comeback with a decisive bronze medal at the World Indoor Championships and will be out to prove a point in Shanghai. He competed in the 200m and 4x10m relay at the Tom Jones Memorial before racing at the Texas A&M Alumni Muster.
Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy, winner of the 2025 Kip Keino Classic and the 2025 world indoor 60m silver medallist, also takes to the blocks.
He has enjoyed a great 2026 season so far and will be looking to continue the hot streak. Home talent Xie Zhenye will also be in the mix.
