Depay reportedly denounced his father for abandoning him as a child
Memphis Depay reportedly endured a tough growing up.
The Netherlands international had previously dropped his father’s name after reportedly alleging that his father abandoned him as a child.
“I will never forgive him,” Depay was quoted to have told BBC via Goal about his Ghanaian father, following his decision to drop his surname in 2012.
“Do not call me Depay, call me Memphis. No, I don’t want to explain exactly what happened at home because I don’t want to make people feel ashamed. And that’s how it will remain because I’ve already moved on.”
Depay’s Ghanaian father, Dennis, reportedly left the family when Memphis was three years old.
His mother, Cora Schensema, remarried in 2002 to a neighbour.
However, things did not go so well either, as his stepfather won a latter and disappeared.
His mother reportedly spent several months in a mental health centre, forcing the footballer to live with his maternal grandparents.
However, since then, the former Lyon and Manchester United star seemed to have forgive his father, Dennis Depay.
He has also consistently paid trips to his hometown in Ghana, where he has made contributions to child education and development.
