Marcell Jacobs Searching for His Spark Ahead of LA 2028 Olympics
Reigning Olympic 100m champion Marcell Jacobs has revealed he may target the 2028 Los Angeles Games, provided he can overcome a series of recent injury setbacks and rediscover his top form.
The Italian sprinter, who stunned the athletics world with his victory at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, told Sky Sport Italia that his future in the sport depends on finding "that spark" again. A full commitment would see him compete for at least three more years.
Marcell Jacobs became a household name in Tokyo after clocking a blistering 9.80 seconds to win the 100m final, later adding a second gold medal in the 4x100m relay.
His momentum carried into 2022, where he was crowned the 60m world indoor champion and successfully defended his European 100m title.
Marcell Jacobs continued his continental dominance in 2024, securing two more European golds in the 100m and 4x100m relay.
However, the period since his Olympic triumph has been marred by persistent injuries. Marcell Jacobs has struggled to replicate his peak performance, failing to break the 10-second barrier in both the 2023 and 2025 seasons. Throughout his career, he has officially run under 10 seconds on 11 occasions.

The 31-year-old emphasised that any decision to continue would require a return to consistent, high-intensity training.
"If I were ever to find that spark again…the one I’m trying at all costs to re-light, I’d like to have a clear situation that would allow me to train at 100 per cent," Marcell Jacobs stated.
"And in that case, it wouldn’t be for just one year, but at least three," he added. "The goal would become Los Angeles 2028."
Despite his recent challenges on the track, Marcell Jacobs remains a formidable force indoors. His personal best of 6.41 seconds in the 60m, set in Belgrade in 2022, still stands as the Italian national record.
