The Spanish shot-stopper has been locked in talks with United over a new deal and had already been asked to take a wage reduction from £375,000 to £200,000.

Recently, it came to light that even the new offer has been pulled, with the club expecting the 32-year-old to accept less and reduced playing time.

According to Sun Sport, United want De Gea to hang around while they figure out a solution. Manager Erik ten Hag is firmly on the market for a new goalkeeper, preferably one that can distribute at an elite level, and Inter's Andre Onana is of strong interest.

However, funds are limited at the moment and United envisage a situation where they may need to reunite with De Gea and so have asked him to hang around before making a decision to go elsewhere.

The Red Devils are desperately trying to raise money through player sales in order to boost Ten Hag's transfer kitty ahead of what is sure to be another testing season.
