Lookman Hot on Osimhen’s Heels: Now second highest Nigerian scorer in Serie A history

Ademola Lookman has further cemented his position as one of Nigeria's top performers in Serie A, moving into second place among Nigerian scorers in the league's history. 

His brace against Empoli on Sunday brought his total Serie A goals to 36, leaving him only behind Victor Osimhen, who has scored an impressive 65 goals.

Lookman's recent performance was particularly noteworthy, coming just days after a public disagreement with his manager, Gian Piero Gasperini, following Atalanta's Champions League exit. 

Despite the heated controversy, Lookman demonstrated his resilience and skill by scoring twice in Atalanta's 5-0 thrashing of Empoli.

The match against Empoli began with an own goal from Emmanuel Gyasi, setting the stage for Atalanta's dominance. 

Matteo Retegui added to the score before assisting Lookman for his first goal, moving him level with former Bologna star Simy Nwankwo, who has scored 34 Serie A goals.

Lookman's second goal came early in the second half, taking him to second spot, and Davide Zappacosta sealed the victory with the fifth goal.

Following the Champions League exit, where Lookman missed a penalty and faced criticism from Gasperini, both parties worked to mend their relationship. 

Gasperini acknowledged Lookman's contributions and expressed hope that he could become a reliable penalty taker in the future. 

Lookman responded to the criticism by emphasising his commitment to the club and clarifying the circumstances surrounding the penalty.
