Liverpool Legend on Why Arsenal's Stalemate Against Crystal Palace Presents a Challenge Ahead of PSG Clash
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has slammed Arsenal's draw against Crystal Palace as a potential challenge ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash with PSG.
The Gunners take on the French champions in an all-important game on Tuesday with their league campaign dashed.
However, Arsenal will need the momentum and rest from their league fixtures as they eye their maiden Champions League trophy.
The Champions League winner with Liverpool believes the draw against Palace could have set back Arsenal's ability to fully utilize their preparation against PSG.
Carragher on the Challenge Ahead for Arsenal
The Gunners surrendered the lead twice on Thursday as Eberechi Eze and Jean-Philippe Mateta canceled out Jakub Kiwior's and Leandro Trossard's strikes to share the spoils in a 2-2 draw.
This result left the door still open on Arsenal's Champions League qualification next season.
While the Gunners are still well in pole position to secure European football, Carragher believes an assurance with a win on Thursday could have given them the much-needed leeway to rest players for their next league fixture against Bournemouth in between their two ties against PSG.
"I think Arteta will be furious," said Carragher post-match, as quoted by Sky Sports.
"They will be fine for qualifying for the Champions League but you want to put it to bed as soon as you can. If they’d have won tonight, you could write the Bournemouth game off in between PSG and rest the whole team. I don’t think he’s in a position to do that now as Liverpool come after that," he added.
"If they lose the next two games, then they are just behind you and they still have to go to Newcastle. You just don’t want to be looking over your shoulder."
Arsenal's Champions League Qualification
With four league games to go for the Gunners, their title hopes are already dashed.
However, they are among the few teams comfortably in a Champions League spot amid a fiercely contested campaign.
Arsenal, who sit on 67 points after 34 games, are trailed by Manchester City with 61, Nottingham Forest with 60, and Newcastle with 59.
The latter two have a game in hand on the Gunners and could close that gap considerably with wins, having Arsenal looking over their shoulder as they tackle PSG.
Arsenal will hope to cement their Champions League spot with a win against Bournemouth in their league outing and hope to overcome PSG to set up a final with either Inter Milan or Barcelona.
