Like Brazil vs Argentina - Chelsea midfielder excited about Flamengo test
Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos has spoken about his unique connection to the Blues' next Club World Cup opponents, Flamengo.
Enzo Maresca’s men beat Los Angeles FC 2-0 in their opening fixture on Monday, courtesy of goals from Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez.
Entering into their second group stage game, the Blues could seal qualification by clinching maximum points and results elsewhere going their way.
Santos, who had a stunning season at Strasbourg last term, is expected to be part of Chelsea set-up this season, aiming to retain their place in the coveted Champions League positions and make their mark in Europe’s premier club competition.
Santos on facing Flamengo
Ahead of Friday’s match, the midfielder commented on facing the Brazilian club, recounting his time at Vasco de Gama and the fiery rivalry with Flamengo.
“I know there are many people from Brazil here and the support of their fans is amazing,” said Santos. “But we have to be constant and do our work.
“I played for Flamengo’s rival, so when I’m on the pitch, they’re probably not going to say nice things about me! It’s probably going to happen, but it’s football, it’s normal for me. It's not a problem.”
The Chelsea midfielder then spoke about the maturity he has experienced in the last two years, which makes him ready to now be a part of the Blues’ first-team.
“When we talk about Chelsea, we have to work to win every competition,” the 21-year-old continued.
“In two years [since being included on our pre-season tour], a lot of things have happened. Now I have my son, I’m married, my whole life has changed. I have more experience, and I think I can be ready for the huge challenge.”
What’s next for Chelsea?
After facing Flamengo, Chelsea will face Tunisian outfit Esperence on June 25 in their final group stage game.
