The 32-year-old is on a contract that expires in 2025 and City have reportedly put any extension talks on hold until he returns to action.
According to The Daily Star, City boss Pep Guardiola is desperate to keep De Bruyne at the Etihad but believes his recovery is the only thing that matters now.
The report further states that the Premier League champions had been preparing a contract extension until 2027 before the midfielder's injury.
The Belgian maestro has made 240 Premier League appearances, scoring 64 goals and providing 102 assists.
