Kanu turns 49: Super Eagles celebrate legend on birthday
Nigerian football icon Nwankwo Kanu marked his 49th birthday on Friday, August 1, 2025.
Born on this day in 1976 in Owerri, Imo State, Kanu known as "Papilo" is regarded as one of the greatest to wear the Green and White.
Kanu celebrates 49th birthday
This celebration comes just days after Arsenal commemorated Kanu’s iconic hat-trick against Chelsea on October 23, 1999.
The official Super Eagles official social media platforms celebrated Kanu on his special day.
They put up an image of Kanu in his iconic green and white jersey with a message that said, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY KANU NWANKWO."
On his official social media platforms he posted a video compliation.
Along with the video was a message that said, "KAN U BELIEVE IT 🙏 +1 🎂 I THANK GOD 🙏."
Kanu accompanied Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to the burial of his parents in Rivers State.
The career of Kanu
Kanu burst onto the international stage with Nigeria’s victorious U-17 World Championship team.
His heroics at the tournament earned him a massive move to Ajax in 1993.
In 1995 he claimed the UEFA Champions League title and an Olympic gold medal in 1996 with Nigeria.
After signing with Inter Milan, he was diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition and underwent surgery to continue his career.
