Following a Turkish Cup match, which Gala won, the Portuguese coach, then at Fenerbahce, pinched his rival's nose, causing Buruk to immediately fall to the ground clutching his face.

"I reacted like a player, I fell to the ground. I exaggerated a bit. I didn't expect something like that from him. I was shaking hands with the referees and heading to the other side to celebrate our victory. He came towards me. Normally, we shake hands after the game ends," Buruk said in an interview with The Athletic.

"It was very difficult to face Mourinho. When he signed for Fenerbahce, he started talking a lot. We know his style. He doesn't just play on the field. He wants to play off it too.

"He tried many things, but in the end, we were better than him. I was better than him. We won the title against him. We beat his team twice on the field. Unfortunately, he won't be here [in Turkey] this year. We hoped to play against him two more times," he added, acknowledging the Special One's charisma, but also offering a critique.

"He can't concentrate like before. He doesn't approach football like before. His coaching style hasn't changed at all. He's an important figure, he has charisma, but we have to improve every year from a footballing perspective. Perhaps his problem lies in the fact that he hasn't developed as a coach," he remarked.

Galatasaray will face Liverpool on Tuesday in a Champions League group stage match.

"We are Galatasaray: we have to win every game. Last year, we were champions with two matches to spare, but we played those two games as if they were finals. Galatasaray never gives up," he concluded.
