‘I was on holiday’ - New Chelsea signing discusses playing for Maresca's team at Club World Cup

Joao Pedro expressed pride after making a significant debut for Chelsea, helping them secure a 2-1 victory over Palmeiras and progress to the Club World Cup semi-finals. 

Having signed earlier in the week, the Brazilian forward's performance was notable, particularly after the Blues’ early lead was cancelled out.

Pedro's introduction helped Chelsea gain control, with his ability to bring down long passes and execute impressive runs. 

The forward conveyed his happiness at contributing to the win and progressing to the next round, emphasising the need to now focus on their upcoming match against Fluminense. 

“It’s an important win,” Joao Pedro said. “I was on holiday, so to come on and to play like I did is very satisfying for me.

“I’m very happy to get through to the next round, but now we need to rest and focus on Fluminense.”

The former Brighton man also enjoyed linking up with Cole Palmer in a competitive game after playing against the Englishman previously.

“Cole is a very good player,” he continued. “Everyone knows that he can change the game like he did today and I enjoyed playing alongside him.

“The manager told me to play free, do my best and I think I did. It’s important we got through to the next round.”

Chelsea will face Fluminense in the semi-final, where they will be reunited with former centre-back Thiago Silva, for a place in the final.
