Manchester United's defensive overhaul remains a priority for manager Erik ten Hag, and one name that has been constantly linked with a move to Old Trafford is Bayern Munich defender Matthijs De Ligt.

The Dutch center-back, who previously worked with Ten Hag at Ajax, lost his starting spot under Thomas Tuchel last season, paving the way for a potential move.

United have already made a statement signing in Leny Yoro, but they're eager to further bolster their backline.

According to reports, they've submitted a €35m (£29.4m) offer for De Ligt, which Bayern Munich has rejected.

Bayern figurehead Uli Hoeness addressed the situation, saying, "It's possible that a defender will leave."

When asked about De Ligt, he added, "I would have no problem if he stays." However, Hoeness made it clear that Dayot Upamecano is not for sale, stating, "Personally, I would not sell Upamecano."

With Bayern having already secured Michael Olise and Joao Palhinha for the upcoming season under Vincent Kompany, it remains to be seen whether United can persuade them to part with De Ligt.

Ten Hag's admiration for the player and their previous working relationship may yet play a crucial role in convincing Bayern to sell.
