"I didn't play well" – Captain Mbappe takes responsibility for Nations League defeat following return to France squad

Kylian Mbappé has openly acknowledged his subpar performance in recent Nations League fixtures. 

In a candid press conference ahead of France's quarter-final clash against Croatia in Split, the Real Madrid star and France captain reflected on his previous displays and emphasised his commitment to improvement.

Mbappé's last appearance for Les Bleus was a 3-1 defeat to Italy on 6th September at Paris's Parc des Princes, his former home ground with Paris Saint-Germain. 

Recalling that period, Mbappé admitted in a press conference as per ESPN, "I am lucid enough to know what I do well and what I don't do well. I know people were not happy with what I was doing on and off the field, and I wasn't doing them well."

 He further expressed his openness to constructive criticism, stating, "I have no problem questioning myself. I have never had any problem with criticism when it is deserved and well-argued." 

Mbappe’s remarks seems to be a u-turn from his stance six months prior, when he dismissed external opinions, asserting they were "the least of my worries." 

At that time, he also remarked, "I don't care" about the reception he might receive at PSG's stadium following his departure amidst tensions with the club's hierarchy and supporters.

Despite a challenging spell, Mbappé remains a pivotal figure for France, boasting 48 international goals and ranking third on the nation's all-time scoring list. 

His recent form at Real Madrid has been impressive, netting 31 goals in 44 appearances this season, putting him firmly in the Ballon d’Or race this year.

Addressing his current mindset, he shared, "I am feeling good, I feel happy to play football. I am happy to be here to help the [France] team." 

The upcoming fixture against Croatia presents an opportunity for Mbappé to rediscover his scoring touch on the international stage. 

Mbappe will reunite with PSG’s red-hot forward Ousmane Dembélé, who is currently  the French league's top scorer.

 France are gearing up for their Nations League quarter-final clash against Croatia later tonight, with Mbappé aiming to steer Les Bleus towards victory and reaffirm his status on the international stage.
