HSBC SVNS 2: Time and Where to Watch as Shujaa and Lionesses Fight for Promotion in Montevideo
Kenya's national sevens teams, Shujaa and the Lionesses, are set for a pivotal weekend as they head to Montevideo, Uruguay, for the second leg of the HSBC SVNS 2 series.
The tournament, running from Saturday, March 21, to Monday, March 23, at the Estadio Charrua, is a critical step in their quest for promotion to the top-tier HSBC SVNS 1.
With only two rounds remaining in the newly-structured series, both Kenyan squads are under pressure to perform. The opening leg, held in Nairobi in February, saw Germany's men and Uruguay's women emerge as early leaders, each securing 20 points.
Shujaa’s Programme Revealed
Shujaa, Kenya's men's team, had a strong start on home soil, remaining undefeated in the group stages. However, their title hopes were dashed by a 21-5 defeat to the USA in the final, leaving them in third place with 16 points. Under the guidance of head coach Kevin Wambua, the team is determined to reclaim its spot among the world's elite.
Their Montevideo campaign kicks off with a highly anticipated rematch against the USA on Saturday at 6:32pm (Kenyan time). Later that evening, they will take on Canada at 9:20pm before concluding their first day of action against Belgium at 12:08am on Sunday.
Shujaa's schedule continues on Sunday night with a match against Germany at 9:55pm, followed by a final fixture against host nation Uruguay at 12:48am on Monday.
Lionesses Faced With Tough Task
Meanwhile, the Kenya Lionesses are looking for redemption in Montevideo after a challenging tournament in Nairobi. Coached by Simon Odongo, the women's team secured only one victory—a tight 15-12 win over Brazil—to finish in fifth place with 12 points. A stronger performance in Uruguay is essential to keep their promotion dreams alive.
The Lionesses will begin their campaign on Saturday at 5:00pm (Kenyan time) against China, followed by matches against Argentina and Spain later in the day. Their tournament will conclude on Sunday with fixtures against South Africa and Brazil.
Following the Montevideo leg, the series will move to Sao Paulo, Brazil for the final round from March 28-29, where the teams earning promotion to the HSBC SVNS 1 will be decided.
