Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has revealed that Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne stands out as the toughest player he has ever faced on the pitch.

Bassey lavished praise on the Belgian star, highlighting his remarkable athleticism, movement, and predatory instincts.

De Bruyne’s Premier League career has been nothing short of extraordinary. Since joining Manchester City in January 2015, he has made over 280 league appearances, scoring 70 goals and registering 118 assists, second only to Man United icon Ryan Giggs for the most assists in Premier League history.

He has helped City secure six Premier League titles along with multiple domestic and international trophies, including the 2023 UEFA Champions League.

Bassey spoke about his toughest opponent.

Speaking in a video on Instagram, the 25-year-old noted that the Belgian’s ability to drag defenders out of positions amongst other things made him and killer and top man.

“Obviously De Bruyne, one of the best,” Bassey said. “He’s just got everything - like he’s a killer. He drags you out of position. He’s an athlete as well. I don’t think people realise how athletic he is. De Bruyne’s top man.”

His ability to create chances is unmatched, having crafted over 820 opportunities in Premier League play and sharing the record for most assists in a single season (20 assists in 2019-20). 

Known as one of the best midfielders of his generation, De Bruyne announced he will leave Manchester City at the end of the 2024-25 season, cementing a legacy as one of the greatest creatives the league has ever seen.
