Harambee Stars Defender Targets Move from Sweden to FKF Premier League to Catch Benni McCarthy's Eye
Former Gor Mahia defender Frank Odhiambo has expressed his willingness to return to the FKF Premier League, as he looks to reclaim his place in the Kenyan national team, Harambee Stars.
Frank Odhiambo believes his decision could be a strategic move for his career, as he looks to catch the attention of Benni McCarthy after his time in Sweden.
Frank Odhiambo's season-long loan at Swedish third-tier club Karlstad Fotboll recently concluded, as confirmed by the club on Sunday.
The defender originally signed a five-year contract with top-flight Swedish side Djurgårdens in 2022 but has yet to make a first-team appearance, instead being sent on four separate loan spells.
Frank Odhiambo Targeting a Move Back to Kenya From Sweden
Despite his European experience, the 22-year-old believes a move back to Kenya's top flight could boost his international prospects.
“I am open to returning to the FKF Premier League during the mid-season transfer window," Odhiambo stated in an exclusive interview with Mozzart Sport.
"I strongly feel that a player performing well in the Kenyan top tier has a better chance of earning a Harambee Stars call-up compared to one playing in the Swedish third tier. I would not mind returning home and playing competitive matches consistently.”
The Bongonaya Academy graduate revealed that while he has received interest from several clubs, none are from Sweden's top division, and his former club, Gor Mahia, has not yet made an offer.
“Four clubs, including Vasalund, have expressed interest so far, none of them from the top division," he disclosed. "However, I want to play in a top-tier league going forward.”
After loan spells at IFK Haninge, Vasalund, AFC Eskilstuna, and Karlstad, Frank Odhiambo feels he has gained valuable experience and is prepared for a higher level of competition, ideally with his parent club.
“The loan spells have prepared me well for top-flight football. I feel I have gained the necessary experience and I am ready to make my debut for the club and in the top division.”
In the coming weeks, Frank Odhiambo will weigh his options carefully, with a potential return to the FKF Premier League emerging as a pragmatic step to reignite his career and strengthen his chances of returning to the national team.
