Harambee Stars Defender Reveals One Post-CHAN Pressure That Has Finally Eased
Gor Mahia defender Sylvester Owino has spoken about the challenges and rewards of his rising popularity following a standout performance at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Sylvester Owino was a key player for Harambee Stars, which made a run to the quarter-finals of the tournament in August.
His impressive displays for the national side earned him a significant following, particularly on social media platforms like TikTok.
This newfound celebrity has also been evident at club matches, where fans chant his name and young supporters seek his autograph.
Sylvester Owino Opens Up About Fame After CHAN 2024
Speaking after Gor Mahia's narrow 1-0 defeat to rivals AFC Leopards in the 98th Mashemeji Derby, the 24-year-old defender reflected on his increased public profile.
"It's crazy. It was even crazier right after CHAN," Sylvester Owino admitted. "It was difficult to even move around, but the pressure has eased a bit now, and I'm managing."
Despite the added attention on the normally reserved player, Sylvester Owino is embracing the positive side of his fame, viewing it as a direct result of his efforts on the pitch.
"It makes me happy, though, because it's the hard work that makes people recognise me," he explained. "I will keep pushing and working hard to earn recognition not only in Kenya but also around the world."
A consistent presence for his club, the former Kakamega Homeboyz player has started in all but one league match for K’Ogalo this season.
The team had enjoyed a strong start before suffering consecutive defeats to APS Bomet and AFC Leopards. Addressing the supporters' disappointment after the derby loss, Owino offered a message of encouragement.
"We have another match coming up, and we have to prepare to win it to ease the pain the fans felt from the derby loss," he stated.
Gor Mahia currently sit second in the league standings with 19 points, just one point behind leaders Kenya Police FC. Their next fixture is an away match against Bandari FC on Friday, December 12, at the KPA Sports Club in Mbaraki.
