Harambee Stars Defender Breaks Silence on Rehab Journey While Awaiting Club's Final Call on His Return
Erick Marcelo Ouma has shed light on the extent of his injury and offered an update on when he expects to return to full action, provided his recovery goes as planned.
The Harambee Stars defender, who is currently in Sweden for treatment, ruptured his Achilles Tendon during training with his Polish club, Raków Częstochowa, on Tuesday, August 26. He underwent successful surgery 10 days later, as confirmed by the club.
The injury is a major setback, initially estimated to keep the versatile defender out for about seven months. This absence has seen him miss five Harambee Stars matches, including four 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Erick Marcelo Ouma: It Depends on What the Team Wants
The former Gor Mahia man has since broken his silence, explaining that he had several options regarding where to handle his rehabilitation.
Ultimately, the Raków Częstochowa left-back chose to continue his recovery in Sweden because he felt supported by someone who knew him well and could guide him effectively.
Erick Marcelo Ouma noted that he is currently working with a specialist who previously served at his former club, AIK, which made the environment even more suitable for his needs.
The Harambee Stars defender further shared that the rehabilitation plan was designed to span half a year, and having already spent about three months there, he expects to return to his club in Poland around April or May.
Erick Ouma added that the exact timing will depend on the decisions made by his team’s management, emphasising that the final call is not his to make.
“Actually, you have a choice, you can either do it in Poland or Sweden or wherever you want. But I decided to go to Sweden because I have someone who understands me, and it was a plus for me. I’m working with a physio who was in AIK,” Erick Ouma told Studio AIK Live.
“The process was for six months, because I have been here for like three months, I think I’ll go back to Poland in April or May. It depends on what the team wants, and it’s not up to me.”
Erick Ouma’s update offers a reassuring glimpse into his steady progress, and although his full return will ultimately hinge on his club’s final assessment, the defender remains optimistic.
His disciplined rehabilitation, coupled with the support around him, suggests that once cleared, he will be ready to pick up where he left off and rejoin both club and country stronger than before.
