Gor Mahia Suffer Crushing Title Race Blow as Top Striker Faces Extended Injury Layoff
Gor Mahia’s leading goalscorer, Felix Oluoch, is set for an extended period on the sidelines after undergoing knee surgery.
The star forward is expected to be out of action for up to three months, a recovery timeline that could see him miss the remainder of the current campaign.
The club's medical staff confirmed that Felix Oluoch, who has found the net seven times this season, had a successful procedure. Team Doctor Brian Odongo elaborated on the injury and the path to recovery.
Felix Oluoch to Miss Crucial League Fixtures
"Felix Oluoch successfully underwent knee surgery for an osteochondral injury and a torn meniscus yesterday," Odongo stated, as quoted by the club.
"He is stable and is expected to return to play in 12 weeks, depending on his rehabilitation progress and recovery milestones."
With the transfer window closed, Felix Oluoch's absence creates a significant void in the team's attack. Head coach Charles Akonnor must now rely on his current squad to fill the gap, with the goal-scoring burden falling primarily on Ebenezer Assifuah.
"Felix is now out, likely until next season," Akonnor confirmed. "We are left with Ebenezer Assifuah as our main striker, and we have to manage him well to navigate the remaining matches without a major setback."
Looking to the future, the former Ghana international acknowledged the need for reinforcements. He indicated that strengthening the attack will be a priority when the transfer window reopens.
"We may have to add another striker when the window opens, as we aim to raise our standards for bigger stages," he added.
Charles Akonnor conceded that the situation is a major test for his squad but expressed confidence in their ability to adapt. He emphasised that smart decision-making will be crucial during this challenging period.
"It’s challenging, but these are the situations we face," Akonnor said. "It means we will have to make certain decisions to balance things while maintaining our focus. We will make good decisions that will be of great significance to the team."
Currently leading the league table with 49 points, six clear of AFC Leopards, the team faces mounting pressure. The coach believes his players' mental fortitude will be their most important weapon in the title race.
"At this stage, mental toughness is key, and that’s one thing we have perfected and trained the boys on," the coach concluded. "They know what to do and when to do it. The focus is on winning, and that means they need to do the right thing."
