Real Madrid's win against Cadiz added pressure on Barcelona to secure a positive result away at Girona on Saturday night. However, the Catalan giants suffered a 4-2 defeat, effectively ruling out any chance of retaining their league title.

It's been a challenging year for Barcelona and manager Xavi, who initially decided to leave but later opted to stay for one more season.

Xavi spoke after the game, insisting Barca's problems all season have been self-inflicted.

He told reporters: "This match shows a lack of competitiveness, a lack of maturity, and individual errors that should not happen at this level.

"Last season we reduced our individual errors, but this season we doubled them.

"We gift the matches to our opponents. It happened twice vs Madrid, and now against Girona. Even against Paris."

Barca now have four La Liga matches remaining as they attempt to claim second place after Girona's victory saw them jump into the runners-up position.
