Genk vs Union SG: Victor Boniface's goal keeps Saints in title race
Victor Boniface was back amongst the goals as Union Saint Gilloise remained in the race for the Belgian Jupiler.
Boniface scored a timely equaliser as the Saints came from behind to hold their host Genk to a share of the spoils on Sunday.
The 22-year-old cancelled out Mark McKenzie’s 13th opener for Genk in their 1-1 draw at the Cegeka Arena.
Boniface saves Union SG
Playing his fourth game of the playoff series, Boniface played a vital role as Union survived on the road to keep pace with leaders Royal Antwerp.
Genk started on the front foot but it was the visitors who looked dangerous from start to finish.
The host took the lead against the run of play when McKenzie fired them in front in the 13th minute.
Despite a goal behind, Union remained dangerous with the away side creating six big chances but only taking one of them.
With six minutes left in the first half, Boniface came to the rescue as he combined with fellow African Simon Adingra to draw Union level.
It was no less than they deserved even as they remained wasteful in the second half with the home side holding on for a share of the spoils.
Union SG stay close to Royal
It has become a royal battle between Union SG and Royal Antwerp for the Jupiler.
Union SG’s draw with Genk saw them close the gap between them and Antwerp who suffered a painful 2-0 defeat to Raphael Onyedika’s Club Brugge in the other game played on Sunday.
With those results, both teams are tied on 45 points with Antwerp at the top on goal difference.
