Speaking ahead of the 2026 edition of the Kip Keino Classic scheduled for Friday, April 26, at the Nyayo National Stadium, Gabby Thomas said that Ferdinand Omanyala’s recent performance served as a powerful source of motivation for many competitors.

She noted that Africa’s fastest man’s journey highlights the reality that athletes can go through difficult periods yet still find the strength to persevere.

Gabby Thomas explained that his resilience and determination to keep pushing forward, despite setbacks, stood out and ultimately demonstrated his ability to return to top form.

The former world 200m silver medallist added that his comeback was a clear reminder, not just to himself but to the wider sporting world, that persistence and belief can lead to redemption, emphasising that he proved his potential through his actions on the track rather than just words.

“Honestly, what you did last week was very inspiring for many athletes. We got to see how you can struggle for a while, but continue to keep your head up and keep pushing and come back and prove to yourself and to the world that you are capable. You showed that you are capable,” she told Ferdinand Omanyala.

Gabby Thomas Opens Up About Her Injury

Gabby Thomas further explained that life as a sprinter demands constant physical strain, with athletes pushing their bodies to extreme limits on a daily basis.

She reflected on her own experience dealing with an Achilles injury last year, noting that it was a particularly challenging period both physically and mentally, during which she often felt far from her best.

She said the experience taught her an important lesson about the nature of elite sport, emphasising that fluctuations in form and fitness are inevitable.

According to her, understanding and accepting those difficult phases is essential, as they are part of the broader journey, and athletes must find ways to overcome setbacks and regain their strength.

“I think that part of it in the life of a sprinter, I think every day we wake up and push our bodies to the limits. Last year, when I was dealing with my Achilles, there were many moments when I didn’t feel like myself because it was painful and it was hard physically and mentally,” Gabby Thomas said.

“I had to understand that as an athlete, there were going to be highs and lows, and that’s part of the journey and part of the beauty of the sport. You have to learn to come out of the lows.”
