From tormenting Super Eagles’ Aina to becoming a Black Cat – Adingra makes surprise move
Simon Adingra’s surprising transfer from Brighton to Sunderland has come as a shock to Premier League fans, especially from Nigeria.
The Ivorian winger, who famously tormented Nigeria’s Ola Aina during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, is set to become a Black Cat in a deal worth around £20 million.
Sunderland have moved quickly to secure the 23-year-old’s signature as part of their ambitious plans to establish themselves in the Premier League.
From AFCON Nemesis to Sunderland Star
Adingra’s rise has been marked by his blistering pace, skillful dribbling, and decisive contributions on the big stage.
At the 2023 AFCON final, he was a constant threat to Nigeria’s defense, particularly Ola Aina, assisting both goals in Ivory Coast’s 2-1 victory and earning Man of the Match and Young Player of the Tournament honours.
After joining Brighton in 2023 for around £8 million from FC Nordsjaelland, Adingra impressed during his loan spell at Union Saint-Gilloise with 15 goals and 14 assists in 51 games.
Over two seasons at Brighton, he made 73 appearances, scoring 12 goals and provided five assists. Despite limited starts last season, his potential convinced Sunderland to pursue him aggressively.

You can’t deal with those teams and go Scot free 🤣
Adingra regressed in 24/25 from a really solid 23/24. Brighton, as usual, are making a smart sale based on underlying metrics. For Sunderland it’s also a good addition because there is a solid player in Adingra if they can get him back to previous performance levels.

The Black Cats had previously attempted to sign Adingra in January as part of a swap deal involving Tommy Watson, but the transfer fell through on deadline day as stated by Skysport.
Now, with the deal close, Sunderland fans will be banking on Adingra’s pace and creativity to boost the team’s attacking options.
This signing signals Sunderland’s intent to compete at the highest level and shows Adingra’s growing reputation as one of the Premier League’s exciting young wingers.
