Former Gabon international Rémy Ebanega has made a bold prediction ahead of Gabon’s 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff semi-final clash with the Super Eagles of Nigeria, tipping his country to come out victorious.

Ebanega, who represented the Panthers during his playing days, believes Gabon can pull off a surprise win despite Nigeria’s strong track record in World Cup qualification.

What Ebanega said

Speaking to Gabon Eco, Ebanega predicted a 2-1 victory for Gabon, expressing confidence in the team’s recent form and growing belief.

“It will be 2-1 in favor of Gabon. It will be close, yes, Nigeria is a tough opponent in Africa, a regular qualifier for the World Cup,” Ebanega said.

He added, “But with what we have seen from the Panthers in recent years, I think we have a chance, and the victory will be difficult, but we will achieve it.”

The highly anticipated fixture will take place on Thursday at the Prince Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, with both sides vying for a place in the final playoff round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria advanced to the playoff stage after a convincing 4-0 victory over the Benin Republic, while Gabon secured their spot following a hard-fought win against Burundi.

The winner of Thursday’s encounter will face either Cameroon or DR Congo for a spot in the Intercontinental Playoffs, where a World Cup ticket will be on the line.
